The Dobe !Kung are an ethnolinguistic group living in northern Botswana in the Kalahari Desert who have been extensively studied by anthropologists. In the 1970s their butchery actions on animal prey were recorded, and their abandoned camps were excavated to retrieve faunal remains from butcheries of prey animals. Here I investigate the ability to accurately predict bone surface modifications from these past observations of butchery actions based on the excavated modern faunal remains. The ability to link past butchery actions, based on the location and presence of bone surface modifications on modern bones, to butchery behaviors can provide archaeologists information about hunter-gatherer cooking styles, use of hides, and processing behaviors of butchers.
