This research investigates the potential of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing audience engagement, satisfaction, and perception of humor in live comedy performances. The study explores the collaboration between human comics and AI tools, specifically OpenAI's DALL-E and ChatGPT, through a series of live comedy shows featuring various AI-human duo experiments. The primary objective is to assess the effectiveness of AI- generated humor in live comedy settings and determine whether AI can effectively operate as a duo to produce laughter and engagement in a live comedy performance.Using evaluative research methods, including assessing audience laughter, conducting expert interviews with professional comedians, alongside 15 audience member interviews from the live performances, the study reveals that while AI-generated humor did not consistently produce laughter, audiences and comedians alike perceive potential in its application within live comedy. Expert interviews highlighted the need for better technology, training, and AI personality usage to enhance live comedy performances. Audience interviews revealed a desire for more real-time AI improvisation and an acknowledgment that AI has a place in the future of comedy as a tool to enhance live shows, provided it is well-crafted, personalized, and trained to function effectively in a live comedy environment.Although the AI did not significantly enhance audience engagement, satisfaction, or perception of humor during the study, the findings suggest that with better training, design, and experimentation, AI has the potential to positively influence live comedy performances. Further research and development are needed to fully realize the potential of AI as a duo in live comedy settings.
