Thesis (M.S.)--New York University Tandon School of Engineering, 2023.
Includes bibliographical references
In this paper, I will be discussing the current issue of ocean pollution on what is the cause, what is the result, and the perspective among the people nowadays. I will be exploring whether Virtual Reality (VR), as a new technology, will be able to play a role in the problem of marine pollution through the characteristics of VR as a form of new media art. According to the characteristics of VR, I will start to investigate the question about how immersive experiences could help to reduce ocean pollution. The points I will cover: connecting to values and emotions; how immersive experience can affect people's thought; existing projects. My thesis project, a VR immersive experience, will be displayed in Meta Oculus 2, environmental builds, visual effects, and interactions made with Unreal Engine 5.1, 3D assets and animation are made with Autodesk Maya, downloaded/bought from Sketchfab.com and Unreal Engine Marketplace, and 3D scanned with Artec Spider. This paper will also cover the process and all the iterations of my project, what I learned, and what the challenges are.
