People's states and needs are constantly changing, so should architecture space. Most interior space layout design is an attempt to find a fixed balance point among the trade-offs of various requirements, compromise to meet various expected needs, but the actual use of people in space is almost unpredictable. According to the paper "Frame and Generic Space" by Leupen: "The more precisely we are able to decide what requirements a dwelling should meet at the start of its life, the greater the likelihood of a discrepancy arising between the dwelling and its future use". Therefore, the space that adapts to people's various changes will be more suitable for humans to live. The exchange of matter and energy between the organism and the external environment as well as the self-renewal process of matter and energy in the organism is called metabolism. The word metabolism was also used as the name of an architectural movement in Japan from the 1940s to the 1980s, which is taking about that the architecture should be a system that is constantly changing and updating. The existing urban space limits the possibilities of megastructures and mega-urban planning which were widely discussed in metabolism movement, but the concept of metabolism can be applied to the interior space of existing standardized buildings through spatial modules. There are two ways to adapt space to changing people: the quantity of spaces that can be added or subtracted, and the changeable function. In a finite space, the increase or decrease of one quantity will lead to the decrease or increase of another quantity. When fixed walls are built, a limited space is formed and the boundaries of human activity are fixed. If this dynamic relationship is transformed from a single room to an entire interior space, the amount of space occupied by each unit can be easily changed, which will help space adapt to unpredictable population movements. People's use of space changes with the amount of space. By adding, reducing, moving, replacing, and internally exchanging prefabricated space modules with various functions, space will change with the needs of people. The aggregation of these changes will be metabolic in space.
