Writing is a necessary part of education, though a skill that many students struggle with or a subject that is overlooked. Similarly, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is an important part of a child's development. It is a topic that has become increasingly popular during and after the COVID-19 Pandemic. These issues led to the development of the research question: how does journal writing impact SEL and writing influence social-emotional learning and academic writing skills of kindergarten students? A review of literature was conducted to examine the topics related to the problem of writing and SEL instruction and the research question that developed. The review had four categories: elementary SEL instruction, feelings about school and relationships, kindergarten writing practices, and journal writing in kindergarten. My study centered around writing journals to include both SEL topics and opportunity to practice writing skills. The study was conducted for four weeks in a kindergarten classroom. The participants were six kindergarten students of different skill levels. Four data sources were collected: school feelings surveys, journal work samples, individual conference notes, and researcher observations. The findings of the study produced three themes: impact on SEL competencies, impact on understanding of written text conventions, and impact on written expression. The students demonstrated an understanding of SEL skills and concepts of print and expressed themselves best through drawings. Suggestions for future research and for teachers are included.
