Creative adolescents have been visiting the Counseling Laboratory for the Exploration of Optimal States (CLEOS) for the past fourteen years. Until 2014, the modal profile of these adolescents demonstrated scores on the Big Five factor of Neuroticism that were average or even below average compared to the general population and required no risk assessment. This changed in 2014, when Neuroticism and its facets of depression, anxiety, and angry hostility increased to above-average levels. One-third of the students required risk assessment, and since then these scores have plateaued. After ruling out other potential causes to this trend such as differences in schools and measurement errors, investigators decided to ask creative students directly. The current study investigates the potential causes of and solutions to the observed trend in anxiety, depression, and suicidality in creative adolescents using a multiple focus group method based in constructivist grounded theory. Focus groups asked about both causes and solutions and participants had a chance to vote on themes identified. Data from 16 focus groups was coded using open coding, and open codes were derived from the themes identified within the focus groups. Data was then subjected to focused coding to establish study-level themes. Results demonstrate a multitude of overlapping issues that creative adolescents face at school, at home, and at the hands of society at large. Among other themes, they see promoting mental health and positive relationships as key to reversing this trend. Participants in this study provided a rich narrative of their experience as creative adolescents and the implications of focus group results are discussed.
