Sir John Tavener's music brings two disparate spheres together, his music being a bridge between the earthly and the Divine. Tavener's works are written within the sphere of Classical music but incorporate many styles of sacred music, most notably Byzantine chant, but with large influences from sacred Indian chant and ragas as well. Tavener's six solo piano works are no exception to his sacred compositional style. This treatise aims to show the effect of the religious and the spiritual in Tavener's life and piano works, and how Tavener holds a distinctive place as a composer in the history of music.
