Approximately 3.22 million Americans have some form of visual impairment, including blindness. For the visually impaired, shopping and selecting clothes for daily wear is a significant and ongoing challenge. In most cases, the visually impaired will learn how to use a braille or non-braille system for clothing recognition. Whether shopping for clothing or selecting clothes to wear for the day, it is critical that the visually impaired have a method to locate, identify, and care for their clothing. There currently are no standards for the design of clothing for the visually impaired, and most of the available options require costly post-production processes, such as embroidery, to simulate braille. The purpose of this study is to explore whether the development of a tactile braille structure can be woven directly into fabrics for the visually impaired to provide clothing-related information. Two major phases of this study were (1) designing a range of woven fabric samples with embedded braille structures and (2) interviewing the visually impaired to assess the legibility of the braille, as well as their clothing preferences. The aim of this research is to contribute to the knowledge base for the improvement of clothing design for the visually impaired in the future.
