Thesis (M.L.A.)--University of Georgia, 2022.
Includes bibliographical references
In a society gripped by rising rates of anxiety and depression, many are turning to expensive therapies and medication in order to cope with daily life. While these treatments offer necessary relief for many, there is a free and accessible treatment option sitting just beyond our doors. It has long been recognized that nature offers relief from physical ailments and mental health struggles, but it is often hard to quantify the exact treatment options and their expected benefits. This thesis reviews known practices such as shinrin-yoku and other expressions of ecotherapy in order to design a research study that explores the quantification of the natural factors participants find most helpful in relieving the symptoms of anxiety or depression. The specific natural experiences and settings that provide the most relief will then be explored as design treatments that can be readily integrated into the spaces where we live, work, and play.
