Thesis (M.F.A.)--Pratt Institute, 2022.

In the study and understanding of history, a focus on intentionalism looms large. However, due to the intricacies of history, the analyses of historical artifacts focus on the intent of the creators of the work, and even in the case of ambiguous results, the best assumptions about the creator's intention will be made based on publicly available information. This thesis research aims to explore forensic strategies for uncovering historical artifacts and ideologies, and as a means to navigate a layered approach to historical understanding beyond formal concerns. It also seeks to reveal the essential value of historical artifacts through a dialogue with personalized historical narratives. This research builds on a theoretical study of implicit hidden content, such as non-intuitive visual effects, new perspectives as the times evolve, scientific and technological intervention and their creation, and explores a return to direct observation of the historical artifacts themselves. The initial phase proposes to reveal the often-overlooked details of the legacy objects, such as composition, color, image, metaphor, material, etc. A second goal is to contextualize findings within a socially diverse framework, and reveal new discoveries and new controversies, rather than just exploring in the comfort zone - the superficial areas that are often known to the public. For example, The technique of cultural property radiography such as X-ray, infrared, thermal, and CT, is commonly used to uncover hidden substrates and pentimenti and other various details that are not visible to the naked eye in historical text, books, and visual and physical artifacts. Also, eliminating the conventional logical way of looking at legacy objects can lead people to focus on deep cultural accumulations and intrinsic values in order to understand the complexities of history instead of generalized assumptions and beliefs.
