Hmong refugees from Southeast Asia relocated to the United States in the mid 70's. Early on, differences were noted in culture between Hmong and Americans. Primarily a patriarchal society, male figures and clan leaders are decision-makers for Hmong families while females assumed domestic roles within the home. This patriarchal culture conflicted with American's individualistic ideology. As a result of this cultural clash, it is salient to explore if Hmong Americans perceive cultural factors as sources of stress. In addition to differences in culture, Hmong Americans have numerous stressors that interfere with daily functioning and increase the risks of psychological distress. To date, limited information is available that can shed some light into the types of psychological distress endorsed or the coping behaviors Hmong-Americans use to manage stress. This dissertation explores the patterns, nature, and extent of cultural stressors, coping skills, and psychological distress for Hmong-Americans. The knowledge gained from this study may result in greater personal insight and better understanding of cultural stress, the types of psychological distress endorsed, and effective and non-effective coping behaviors used by Hmong.
