Oxygen and carbon cycles play a pivotal role for the functioning of terrestrial freshwater ecosystems because both are indicators of energy storage and transfer with large scale relevance for global climate. Their availabilities are strongly influenced by the balances of abiotic and biotic sinks and sources with photosynthesis (P), ecosystem respiration (R), air-water gas exchange (G) and water mixing as the most important ones. However, anthropogenic transformations of natural environments and ongoing climate change have increasingly outbalanced these processes, resulting in a reduced species diversity and degradation of ecosystem services for man and nature. To deepen our understanding of oxygen and carbon cycles in aqueous environments investigations of their stable isotopes (expressed as δ18O, δ13C) have proven valuable to differentiate sources and sinks. New combinations of traditional freshwater monitoring approaches with such sophisticated methods might help to develop improved management strategies to counteract continuing degradation of freshwater habitats. In this thesis a comprehensive literature review combined with statistical analyses provides detailed understanding of dissolved oxygen (DO) transfer and turnover processes in river networks that integrate ecological states of entire catchments. This is particularly important because rivers connect surface and subsurface aquatic compartments including lakes, reservoirs, dams, hyporheic zones (HZs), soil waters, springs and groundwaters. With the relevance of DO for aerobic life and a myriad of redox processes, most important sinks and sources in these compartments are addressed. Special attention is given to DO cycles in HZs as a biogeochemically highly active mixing zone of river- and groundwater. Here, so far poorly understood processes such as the iron cycle and residence times of DO are elucidated in greater detail. In addition to this literature review, statistical analyses of the GLobal RIver CHemistry (GLORICH) database indicated a dominance of DO-undersaturated river waters, as well as a negative global trend of DO concentrations at higher water temperatures due to reduced physical solubilities. These analyses could determine critical thresholds of DO relationships between hydrochemistry and catchment properties including land use. This large-scale background served as a basis for a case study of three mid-latitude European headwater streams to obtain more detailed insights in site-specific diel DO and δ18ODO patterns also in context of land use types and proportions. With the first such application in Europe a new DO stable isotope modelling approach combined with detailed knowledge about land use backgrounds. The work helped to quantify key DO drivers P, R and G in each stream section. They revealed a clear trend with heterotrophic conditions at mostly forest-dominated stream sites up to dominance of P at stream sites with highest proportions of agricultural and urban land use proportions. Such small-scale investigations with modelling approaches are useful to estimate vulnerabilities of freshwater ecosystems with regard to future environmental changes. In a complementary study, a pond with seasonal cyanobacteria blooms was investigated with regard to its carbon cycle, including most important dissolved and particulate inorganic and organic phases (DIC, DOC, POC). This study helped to unravel dynamics and causes for the extreme primary productivity rates. DIC and POC concentrations and their respective stable isotope values (δ13CDIC, δ13CPOC) were the most dynamic carbon phases with highest POC concentrations and δ13CPOC values during pronounced growth periods. Such δ13CPOC increases are plausible for the carbon concentrating mechanism (CCM) of cyanobacteria, that enhanced incorporations of the 13C-enriched bicarbonate (HCO3−) when dissolved CO2 (CO2(aq)) became depleted as the primary carbon source. These analyses also revealed unexpected critical thresholds of the activation of the CCM at a pCO2 below 150 µatm and a pH higher than 8.9. Such new understanding of highly dynamic carbon cycles in terrestrial freshwater systems can help to mitigate future deleterious effects of climate change and land use.

520 $a Sauerstoff- (O) und Kohlenstoff- (C) Kreislaufe spielen eine zentrale Rolle fur die Funktionsweise terrestrisch-aquatischer Okosysteme. Weil beide Elemente Indikatoren fur die Energiespeicherung und den Energietransfer sind, haben sie weitreichende Bedeutungen fur das globale Klima. Ihre Verfugbarkeit wird stark vom Gleichgewicht abiotischer und biotischer Quellen und Senken beeinflusst, wobei Photosynthese (P), Okosystematmung (R), Luft-Wasser-Gasaustausch (G) und Wassermischung die wichtigsten Prozesse darstellen. Die Umgestaltung der Umwelt durch den Menschen und der fortschreitende Klimawandel haben diese Prozesse jedoch zunehmend aus dem Gleichgewicht gebracht, was zu einer geringeren Artenvielfalt und einer Verschlechterung der Okosystemleistungen fur Mensch und Natur fuhrt. Um unser Verstandnis der O- und C-Kreislaufe in aquatischen Umgebungen zu vertiefen, hat sich die Anwendung ihrer stabilen Isotope (ausgedruckt als δ18O, δ13C) als wertvolle Methode zur Unterscheidung von Quellen und Senken erwiesen. Die Kombination traditioneller Uberwachungsansatze fur terrestrische Wasser mit neueren, hochentwickelten Methoden konnte dazu beitragen bessere Bewirtschaftungsstrategien zu entwickeln, um der fortschreitenden Verschlechterung von aquatischen Lebensraumen entgegenzuwirken. Diese Arbeit liefert durch eine umfassende Literaturrecherche ein detailliertes Verstandnis der Transfer- und Umsatzprozesse von gelostem Sauerstoff (DO) in Flussen. Diese Umsetzungen konnen okologische Zustande ganzer Einzugsgebiete integrieren, da sie ober- und unterirdische aquatische Kompartimente wie Seen, Stauseen, Damme, hyporheische Zonen (HZ), Bodenwasser, Quellen und Grundwasser miteinander verbinden. Angesichts der Bedeutung des Sauerstoffs fur das aerobe Leben und eine Vielzahl von Redoxprozessen werden die wichtigsten Quellen und Senken in diesen Kompartimenten genauer betrachtet. Besonderes Augenmerk wird auf den DO-Kreislauf in der HZ als biogeochemisch aktive Mischungszone von Fluss- und Grundwasser gelegt. Hier werden bisher kaum verstandene Prozesse, wie der Eisenkreislauf und die Verweilzeiten im Zusammenhang mit dem Sauerstoffgehalt naher beleuchtet. Zusatzlich zu dieser Literaturubersicht offenbarten statistische Analysen der GLobal RIver CHemistry (GLORICH)-Datenbank eine Dominanz von DO-untersattigten Flussdaten. Ebenso zeigte sich ein negativer globaler Trend der DO-Konzentrationen bei hoheren Wassertemperaturen, der auf reduzierte Loslichkeiten zuruckzufuhren ist. Mit diesen Analysen konnten kritische Schwellenwerte fur die Beziehung zwischen DO und hydrochemischen Parametern sowie Einzugsgebietseigenschaften, einschlieslich der Landnutzung, ermittelt werden. Von diesem grosmasstablichen Hintergrund aus wurde eine Fallstudie an drei mitteleuropaischen Oberlaufen in mittleren Breitengraden durchgefuhrt, um detailliertere Einblicke in standortspezifische Tag-Nacht Schwankungen der DO- und δ18ODO-Werte auch im Kontext von Landnutzung zu erhalten. Durch die Europa-weit erste Anwendung eines Modellierungsansatzes fur stabile DO-Isotope in Kombination mit detaillierten Kenntnissen uber die Landnutzungshintergrunde konnten die wichtigsten DO-Faktoren P, R und G quantifiziert werden. Diese ermoglichten einen direkten Vergleich der verschiedenen Flusssysteme. Die Kombination dieser Ergebnisse zeigte einen klaren Trend mit heterotrophen Bedingungen in uberwiegend walddominierten Fliesgewassern bis hin zur Dominanz von P in Fliesgewassern mit erhohten Anteilen an landwirtschaftlicher und stadtischer Landnutzung. Diese Zusammenhange zwischen Landnutzung und DO-Dynamiken liesen sich aus der hoheren photosynthetisch aktiven Strahlung (PAR) und der Nahrstoffverfugbarkeit ableiten, wahrend DO-Zyklen auch durch die Nahe zu ihren Quellen und verstarkten Grundwasseraustausch verursacht werden konnten. Solche kleinraumigen Untersuchungen mit Modellierungsansatzen sind hilfreich, um die Anfalligkeit von Suswasserokosystemen im Hinblick auf kunftige Umweltveranderungen abzuschatzen. Photosynthese war auch ein zentrales Untersuchungsthema in einem Teich mit saisonalen Cyanobakterienbluten. Das Gewasser wurde mit Fokus auf seinen Kohlenstoffkreislauf untersucht wobei hierbei die wichtigsten gelosten und partikularen anorganischen und organischen C-Phasen (DIC, DOC, POC) dazu eingesetzt wurden Dynamiken und Ursachen fur hohe Primarproduktivitat zu entschlusseln. Die DIC- und POC-Konzentrationen und die entsprechenden stabilen Isotopenwerte (δ13CDIC, δ13CPOC) waren die dynamischsten Kohlenstoffphasen wahrend ausgepragter Wachstumsperioden. Starke Anstiege des δ13CPOC lassen sich durch den Kohlenstoff-Konzentrationsmechanismus (CCM) der Cyanobakterien erklaren, der zusatzlichen Aufnahme von naturlich 13C-angereichertem Bicarbonat (HCO3−) ermoglichte. Dies war besonders dann der Fall wenn das geloste CO2 (CO2(aq)) als primare Kohlenstoffquelle erschopft war. Daruber hinaus zeigten diese Analysen neue kritische Schwellenwerte fur die Aktivierung des CCM bei einem CO2-Partialdruck (pCO2) unter 150 µatm und einem pH-Wert von uber 8,9. Besseres Verstandnis dieser hochdynamischen Kohlenstoffkreislaufe in solchen aquatischen Systemen konnte dazu beitragen, schadliche Auswirkungen des Klimawandels und der Landnutzung in Zukunft abzumildern.
