This dissertation contains two chapters that can be broadly categorized to the literature on exogenous shocks to the monetary system and their effects on European convergence. The two chapters attempt to empirically investigate how changes to monetary policy after the financial crisis of 2007-2009 have affected the bank credit channel, and how the COVID-19 pandemic crisis has affected the European integration process. Specifically, Chapter 1 aims to investigate the convergence pattern of 27 countries of the European Union (EU) during the COVID-19 pandemic period by applying the Phillips and Sul (2007, 2009) methodology. The motivation behind this paper is to analyze whether there are long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the convergence process of the European Union. The hypothesis that we empirically test is that the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting from the different degrees of stringency of the responses, will result in a divergence between the EU member states. As a result, this behavior will lead to deteriorating conditions among EU countries and will decelerate their unification. Our findings suggest that the countries converge into two clubs. Both clubs are composed of countries that have previously been classified as either "core" or "periphery" European countries, indicating that, in this particular crisis, this classification is too simplistic. We argue that the difference in national policies has led to a schism between the countries in the two clubs, and that fiscal policy needs to come into play if policymakers want to prevent a further weakening of the EU convergence process. Chapter 2 explores the role of central bank interventions in the form of unconventional monetary policies (asset purchase programs) and their ability to influence bank loan supply. Through novel spatial econometric techniques, we propose that the unexpected size of the European Central Bank's (ECB's) quantitative easing program led to an increased loan supply from monetary financial institutions (MFIs) after 2015, while positively affecting expectations. The effect is more pronounced on the total amount of loans provided by MFIs. The estimated models include 18 Eurozone members, and the results are based on 2502 observations (collected from Datastream, the ECB and other sources) that indicate that central bank interventions improve credit conditions through the bank credit channel, resulting in the creation of both direct and indirect spillover effects. Finally, the results also suggest that central bank interventions are expressed mainly from policy announcements as well as actual asset purchases.

520 $a Αυτή η διατριβή περιέχει δύο κεφάλαια τα οποία ανήκουν στην ευρύτερη βιβλιογραφία των εξωγενών σοκ στο ευρωπαϊκό νομισματικό σύστημα και τις επιπτώσεις τους στην ευρωπαϊκή σύγκλιση. Τα δύο κεφάλαια της διπλωματικής εργασίας προσπαθούν να διερευνήσουν εμπειρικά πώς οι αλλαγές της νομισματικής πολιτικής μετά την οικονομική κρίση της περιόδου 2007-2009 έχουν επηρεάσει το δανεισμό των τραπεζών και πώς η πανδημική κρίση COVID-19 έχει επηρεάσει τη διαδικασία της ευρωπαϊκής ολοκλήρωσης. Συγκεκριμένα, το Κεφάλαιο 1 στοχεύει στη διερεύνηση της σύγκλισης των χωρών της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, κατά την περίοδο της πανδημίας COVID -19, εφαρμόζοντας τη μεθοδολογία Phillips and Sul (2007, 2009). Στόχος αυτού του ερευνητικού ερωτήματος είναι να εντοπιστεί εάν υπάρχουν μακροπρόθεσμες επιπτώσεις της πανδημίας COVID-19 στη διαδικασία σύγκλισης της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης. Η υπόθεση που δοκιμάζουμε εμπειρικά είναι ότι οι δυσμενείς επιπτώσεις της πανδημίας COVID-19, λόγω διαφορετικών βαθμών αυστηρότητας στα μέτρα αποστασιοποίησης, θα οδηγήσουν σε αποκλίσεις μεταξύ των κρατών μελών της ΕΕ. Ως αποτέλεσμα, αυτή η συμπεριφορά θα οδηγήσει σε επιδείνωση των συνθηκών μεταξύ των χωρών της ΕΕ και θα επιβραδύνει την ενοποίησή τους. Τα ευρήματά μας υποδηλώνουν ότι οι χώρες συγκλίνουν σε δύο clubs. Και τα δύο clubs απαρτίζονται από χώρες που είχαν προηγουμένως ταξινομηθεί ως Ευρωπαϊκές χώρες που ανήκουν στον «πυρήνα» ή στην «περιφέρεια», υποδεικνύοντας ότι παραμένει ενεργός ο διαχωρισμός μεταξύ των δύο. Παράλληλα υποστηρίζουμε ότι η ποσοτική χαλάρωση οδήγησε εν μέσω κρίσης σε μια αρχική σύγκλιση, αλλά μακροπρόθεσμα φαίνεται πως η απόκλιση παραμένει μεταξύ των ομάδων Club 1 και Club 2. Με αυτό ως δεδομένο το κεφάλαιο καταλήγει πως η δημοσιονομική πολιτική πρέπει να είναι πιο ενεργή εάν οι υπεύθυνοι χάραξης πολιτικής θέλουν να αποτρέψουν την περαιτέρω αποδυνάμωση της διαδικασίας σύγκλισης ΕΕ. Το Κεφάλαιο 2 διερευνά το ρόλο των παρεμβάσεων της κεντρικής τράπεζας με τη μορφή Αντισυμβατικών Νομισματικών Πολιτικών (προγράμματα αγοράς περιουσιακών στοιχείων) και την ικανότητά τους να επηρεάζουν την προσφορά τραπεζικών δανείων. Μέσω χωρικών οικονομετρικών τεχνικών, εκτιμούμε ότι το απρόσμενο μέγεθος του προγράμματος ποσοτικής χαλάρωσης της Ευρωπαϊκής Κεντρικής Τράπεζας (ΕΚΤ) οδήγησε σε αυξημένη προσφορά δανείων από Νομισματικά Χρηματοπιστωτικά Ιδρύματα (ΝΧΙ) μετά το 2015, επηρεάζοντας θετικά τις προσδοκίες της αγοράς. Η επίδραση είναι πιο έντονη στο συνολικό ποσό των δανείων που παρέχονται από τα χρηματοπιστωτικά ιδρύματα. Τα υπολογιζόμενα μοντέλα περιλαμβάνουν 18 Ευρωζώνες και τα αποτελέσματα βασίζονται σε 2502 παρατηρήσεις (που συλλέχθηκαν από το Datastream, την ΕΚΤ και άλλες πηγές) και υποδεικνύουν ότι οι παρεμβάσεις της κεντρικής τράπεζας βελτιώνουν τους όρους δανεισμού μέσω του τραπεζικού πιστωτικού καναλιού, με αποτέλεσμα τη δημιουργία τόσο άμεσης όσο και έμμεσης επίδρασης μεταξύ των χωρών της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης. Τέλος, τα αποτελέσματα υποδηλώνουν επίσης ότι οι παρεμβάσεις της κεντρικής τράπεζας εκφράζονται κυρίως από ανακοινώσεις πολιτικής καθώς και από πραγματικές αγορές περιουσιακών στοιχείων.
