This study intends to contribute to the overall knowledge base about how the form of urban spaces affects the crime rate (objective safety) and the degree to which people feel safe in the urban spaces (subjective safety) by analyzing Chicago's urban intersection. Understanding the patterns in which urban space morphology affects crime rate (phase 1), perception of safety (phase 2), and comparing these two is the primary goal of this study. In phase one of the research, we employ several regression analysis methods to empirically investigate the association between Chicago's objective safety (crime rate) and morphological metrics. For this purpose, we focus on the top ten percent of least safe urban blocks intersection and collect a set of significant attributes associated with morphological contexts of the intersections in the 50-meter buffer area of 3986 intersections in Chicago. Two primary regression analyses are used to assess the correlation of morphologic features and the objective safety: (1) Linear Least Squares Methods; (2) Cluster and Factor Analysis. The main goal of the second phase is to explore the most relevant factors threatening perceived personal safety. For this purpose, the psychological and physiological responses of 21 participants are analyzed by collecting their biometric responses while observing eight panorama pictures of Chicago intersections via virtual reality headset. The findings suggest that objective and subjective safety might be influenced differently by the same morphological features. For example, although the cross-sectional proportion (quotient of height divided by width) was associated with more crime in the Chicago intersections, it positively affects perceived safety. The study provides city planners and landscape designers with guidance for the city's overall layout to decrease the crime rate and improve citizens' perception of the city spaces.
