Technical training failure comes at a substantial cost and effects the Air Force's ability to execute its mission. The problem explored by this study was Air Force technical training students failing at least one block of their technical training course. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine perceptions technical training students have regarding factors that lead to technical training block failure and removal from training. The theoretical framework for this research was based on casual attribution theory. A qualitative methodology and case study was used for this research. Qualitative case study design was used for its ability to provide a rich, vivid picture and for its attention to detail when analyzing individuals and their lived experiences. The sample consisted of 10 purposefully sampled Airmen from the 361st Training Squadron propulsion school at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. One-on-one semi-structured interviews and document review were utilized for data collection. Through inductive analysis, codes were derived, and theme identified based on the research question. The findings were organized into seven themes. The seven themes yielded from the study were test anxiety, instructor factors, subject, study methods, learning method, personal distractions, and adapting to the military. The themes enabled the researcher to identify how technical training students interpret their experience while in a technical training course. The results can be beneficial in the development of programs to help technical training students adapt to military life and refreshing the course curriculum and training assets. Future research should look at other technical training failure in other courses, the impact of the study skills class at Sheppard Air Force Base, and how course design matches different learning styles.
