This study focuses on the American liberation experiences when encountering Nazi atrocities in occupied areas, concentration camps, and prisoner of war (POW) camps. While highlighting the plight of Jewish, political, military, and other individuals at the hands of Nazi Germany, this work is centrally focused on the American soldier. How were soldiers informed about Nazi atrocities? What did soldiers know about their role in liberating those under Nazi rule? Soldiers understood the Nazis were bad, but did they fully grasp the nature of Nazi atrocities against the Jews and other groups of people in Europe? I argue that while the Army prepared soldiers for combat operations, the Army did not prepare soldiers to encounter the humanitarian crisis of liberation. My research draws from primary sourced material including individual letters, government documents, official military records, articles from Stars and Stripes and Yank, and many other personal accounts by soldiers, leaders, and prisoners. The historiography I draw from is diverse and substantive; ranging from German passivity to Nazi crimes, American ignorance and indifference to atrocities, and personal accounts and actions by United States Army personnel. In general, American soldiers knew the Nazis were evil and harmful to religious and individual freedom. Soldiers did not understand the unprecedented scope of Nazi atrocities committed in towns, POW camps, and concentration camps across North Africa and Europe during World War II.
