The hydraulic analogy is the comparison between shallow water and inviscid compressible isentropic air flow. It allows a shallow water table to be used as an inexpensive teaching aid compared to a traditional high speed wind tunnel. A shallow water table can provide a physical and visual complement to the theoretical study of compressible flow topics. However, there are restrictions on the analogy such as it cannot model 3-D or viscous effects and it assumes isentropic flow with γ = 2. Experiments were run on various nozzle and airfoil geometries to investigate the capabilities of the shallow water table to display both classical, complex, and unsteady shock phenomena. It was also used to explore in physical experiments the non-uniqueness problem, displayed in computational simulations. Simple numerical schemes are included to simulate quasi 1-D nozzle flow governed by both Euler and Isentropic Euler equations.
