The purpose of this historical study was to review the reform and development of Chinese higher education during the decade 1978 to 1988, against the background of profound political, social, and economic restructuring that was taking place in China at the same period. Chinese higher education has followed a tortuous path as it has evolved over the past 3,000 years, especially in modern and contemporary times. During the recent decade (1978-1988), dramatic, extensive reforms occurred in management, structure, curriculum, faculty, students, and exchanges with foreign countries. These reforms generated significant achievements and caused or exacerbated many problems. On the basis of the examination of the reform and development of Chinese higher education during the recent decade and in view of China's specific conditions, the dissertation made recommendations and anticipations for the development of Chinese higher education during the decades ahead.
