The need for leadership has always been and is still the heart cry of the Christian Church. The Chinese Church is no exception to this need to see Biblically rooted and culturally relevant leaders emerge and develop to equip the Body to accomplish the task given her. The Taiwan Friends Church in particular is seeing a new generation of leadership being raised up. Will they receive the appropriate training that they need to make a significant contribution to the growth and development of the work? Will the "problem of wineskins" (old models for eternal truth) block the church from accomplishing her maximum impact or will they breakthrough into new models, appropriate for their needs? While past research has indicated the need for an appropriate selection process, the concentration of this work is designed to demonstrate that the subsequent development of these selected leaders is equally as critical to the success of the goal of seeing the Church equipped to accomplish her mission. My research approach is to examine the Biblical, western cultural, and historical and contemporary Chinese Christian models of spiritual leadership emergence and development. Similarities and differences will be highlighted to show the trends of change as well as the identification of principles and their subsequent application. This will lead to a life history of some of the present Friends pastors in Taiwan and the issues facing future leadership. In contrast to the youth oriented, knowledge based, residential, education model; a more dynamic, adult oriented, obedience based, contextualized model will be proposed as a possible option for the future.
