This dissertation aims to investigate causes for China's failure to develop modern science between the 15th and 19th centuries through a comparative study of scientific development in the West. The major line of thought is that, a mathematical rationalistic view of nature, in which, as defined in this dissertation, nature is conceptualized as constructed with a mathematical rationality and therefore comprehensible mathematically by human mind, was necessary for the rise of modern science in the 16th and 18th centuries. The intellectual roots of such a view, its formation, development and impact on scientific development in the West from Greece through the Middle Ages to pre-modern times are traced historically and contextually. In comparison, causes for the lack of such a view in the Chinese scientific tradition are explored. This thesis maintains that the Chinese scientific tradition before the 20th century was a complementarity of Confucianism and Taoism which produced a morally naturalistic view of nature. In such a view, nature was not conceived as mathematically constructed and therefore the idea that nature was mathematically comprehensible was lacking. Due to the combination of scholarship and officialdom under Confucianism, traditional Chinese science remained empirical and practical. This dissertation also maintains that the rise of capitalism in the West provided a new, suitable social environment for the blossom of mathematical rationalism of nature which brought about modern science and that, on the other hand, due to the long-standing tradition of state monopoly of commerce and handicrafts and the replacement of Ming by Qing in the crucial time, China's failure to develop the capitalist mode production prevented it from importing modern science, as well as the mathematical rationalism of nature from the West which ultimately kept China from entering the stage of modern science.
