Wildlife management areas (WMAs) are a primary tool for conserving wildlife habitat, provide access for wildlife related recreation, and represent one of the largest areas of protected public lands globally. Because WMAs experience high use from a diversity of recreational user groups, it is important for state conservation agencies and other stakeholders (e.g., local and state governments) to understand the environmental, social, and economic impacts associated with these properties. WMAs provide significant economic contributions to local economies through the market impacts of visitors and via the non-market value of numerous ecosystem services provided to visitors and local residents. Although these concepts have been explored for a variety of protected areas, limited research has quantified the economic contributions and value provided by WMAs. This dissertation begins to fill this gap through three studies. First, we examined how proximity and adjacency (i.e., living immediately on the boarder of a WMA) to WMAs were capitalized into nearby property values, finding that proximity to WMAs had positive effects on property values in some locations, whereas adjacency had consistently negative or nonsignificant effects. Second, we estimated the number of annual WMA visits in North Carolina and the economic contribution of diverse user groups on WMAs to local and state economies. Results from this work suggest state managed WMAs in North Carolina received approximately 2.2 million visits in 2018 and WMA users added over $180 million annually to NC's GDP, over 2,200 jobs, over $84 million in annual labor, and over $36 million in annual state and federal tax revenues. Third, we estimated the non-market value of WMAs by estimating willingness to pay (WTP) for WMA conservation. Results indicate dual-users, those who participated in both licensed (hunting, angling, or trapping) and non-licensed (all other uses) activities, had higher WTP than users who exclusively participated in one or the other. This study demonstrated that all WMA users enjoy large consumer surpluses and may be willing to provide additional financial support for WMA management. Together, these results not only add to the economic contribution and valuation literature, but also provide actionable management recommendations for state conservation agencies.
