Adolescence is a developmental time when physical activity (PA) levels and engagement in physical education (PE) typically declines, especially for females (Leduc et al., 2021). Not only are girls less active than boys, but they also show decreases in positive attitudes toward PE (Safvenbom, Haugen, & Bulie, 2015). Public health officials recognize schools as an arena where adolescents can improve their PA levels through quality PE programs (Pereira, Santos, & Marinho, 2021). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore high school girls' perceptions of PE. Semi-structured interviews allowed the researcher to address the research question of what factors contributed to a decrease in positive attitudes toward physical education among high school females. The research was guided by the theoretical framework of attitude theory, which is a dual-component conceptualization of attitude that encompasses affective and cognitive components. Four themes emerged from the research: 1) students want their voices to be heard, 2) social factors greatly affect the PE experience, 3) the students find PE to be useful, and 4) there is a wide spectrum of feelings toward PE. The findings from this research provide additional insight to extend previous research on high school females' perceptions of PE. These findings should encourage physical educators to examine their current PE curriculum and modify it to include activities that are meaningful from the students' perspective.
