Teaching jazz requires an excellent model. It would be difficult to find a better model than Gerry Mulligan. His many compositions and recordings document the evolution of 20th century jazz like no other. With a career that encompasses work with swing bands of the 1940s, his piano-less quartets and Concert Jazz Band, to his involvement with Miles Davis and the Birth of the Cool, Gerry Mulligan represents several major movements in jazz.Including detailed analysis of Mulligan's orchestration, composition, and harmonic language, the reader will be given a way to utilize Mulligan's music as an example for jazz education. By understanding how his pieces are written, both students and teachers can better assess the style points and performance practices of jazz music. With historical and biographical information to help readers understand Gerry Mulligan as a person and educational models for use with students, this dissertation will give educators a solid tool for understanding and explaining jazz composition.
