This thesis is a unit of study for 4th graders, consisting of 12 lessons that are centered on the theme of Community. This curriculum design includes contemporary artists Faith Ringgold, Jordan Casteel, Carmen Lomas Garza, Romare Bearden, Sheila Hicks, Terri Friedman, Woomin Kim and Kirstyn Hom, whose work emphasizes themes of community, place, surroundings, neighborhoods, found objects and experimental and collective weaving. The culminating project involves students creating individual and communal weavings on small and large cardboard looms using yarn, fabric and found objects. The thesis covers the artist teacher's positionality and reflective statement about the curriculum design process. Also included is a discussion about the artist teacher's emerging tenets of practice in teaching centered on the framework laid out in the Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework by the New York State Education Department (New York State Education Department, 2018).
