This dissertation will argue that the Apostle Matthew correctly understood Hosea 11:1 in itscontext when he applied it to Christ in Matthew 2:15. Although this topic is heavily contested inscholarship, I will argue that Abner Chou's refined understanding of intertextuality when appliedto Hosea 11:1 exegetically unlocks the theology of Hosea, which in turn demonstrates that theApostle Matthew was exegetically sensitive to the context of Hosea 11 in Matthew 2:15. Notonly is Matthew sensitive to Hosea 11, but Hosea 11 cannot be fully understood withoutrecognizing its intertextual dependence upon the texts that came before it. Hosea 11:2 is a case inpoint as commentators still struggle to understand who the referents of Hosea 11:2 are referringto-what they are missing is that Hosea 11:2 intertextually connects back to Numbers 25:1-3concerning the Moabites and their call to Israel to follow their gods. Going further still, manycommentators have recognized that Hosea 11 is connected to the prophecies of Hosea 1-3concerning a new Exodus and new Davidic king arising in the last days; however, they all seemto miss the implications of the intertextual connection of Hosea 1:11 to Exodus 1:10 and 13:18.This intertextual connection demonstrates that the leader of Hosea's new exodus will also be anew Moses. Matthew picks up on these connections and more in his own exegesis in Matthew 2.Yet going further still, Hosea's own prophecies are intertextually built upon Moses's propheciesin the Torah. When synthesizing all the intertextual connections together from Moses to Hosea toMatthew, it demonstrates that Matthew correctly understood and applied Hosea 11:1 to Jesus'sdeparture from Egypt in Matthew 2:15.
