Isaac Backus advocated for religious liberty amidst a backdrop of religious, political, and societal change marked by the Great Awakening and the American Revolution. While religious liberty is a political right, for Backus the basis for religious liberty lay deep within his own theological thinking. This dissertation constructs Backus's Theology of Liberty by exploring his own writings as well as exploring the context in which Backus lived and ministered. This dissertation argues that for Backus, religious liberty was a central outworking of a deeper theological understanding of liberty found in Backus's own understanding of God, Humanity, and Authority.
