This work intends to establish a theological definition of gender within an evangelical theological framework. The proffered definition is as follows: "gender is an ontologically emergent property that arises from sexed bodies, made in the image of God, living in community." Chapter 1 outlines the current theological milieu within evangelicalism regarding a definition of gender. The current landscape of an evangelical definition can be differentiated into three cohorts. They are the absence cohort, the conflation cohort, and the distinction cohort. None of these cohorts are able to answer the salient questions regarding the concept of identity as inferred from Scripture. What is needed is a definition that fulfills the aspirational, reflexive, and reflective dimensions of identity. Chapter 2 provides a biblical treatment of gender, looking specifically at Deut 22:5, 23:1, and 1 Cor 11:14-15. The Bible differentiates the prohibitions of sex acts and gendered acts, substantiating the view that sex and gender are related but distinct concepts.Chapter 3 analyzes the historical and philosophical backgrounds of the various views on gender, highlighting the three views within the cultural and philosophical landscape. They are the Traditionalists, the Performers, and the Westerners, but all three views are in conflict with science, philosophy, and Scripture. What is needed is a theological definition of gender that coheres with science, philosophy, and Scripture.Chapter 4 presents a theological definition of gender by utilizing a relational notion of the image of God, emergentist philosophy, and a classic form of Christian dualism. This chapter brings together the thoughts of John Zizioulas, John Kilner, Thomas Aquinas, and William Hasker in order to substantiate the definition.Chapter 5 applies the definition to various areas of moral theology, including genderless pronouns, medical interventions for transgendered people, and bundling intersex and transgendered people. This chapter concludes with a treatment of gender within Roman Catholic and evangelical public theology, marking out a way for evangelicals and Roman Catholics to partner through shared ethical concerns.
