Modern scholarship has not reached a consensus view on the meaning of the Olivet Discourse (OD). Scholars primarily debate which portions of the OD refer to the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70 and which events refer to the parousia of Jesus. On these matters, scholars affirm one of three major views: a preterist view, a partial-preterist view, or a futurist view. In 1 and 2 Thessalonians, Paul draws upon the OD, but appears to interpret the dominical tradition differently than the presentation offered in the Synoptic Gospels. Paul employed Jesus's language, which referred to the events of AD 70, to the last days and the parousia. If the Apostle offered a different interpretation of Jesus's words, then, it would appear, that he may have contradicted Jesus, assuming that the Synoptic Gospels more accurately preserve the OD. The thesis of this dissertation is that Paul utilized a typological hermeneutic through which he interpreted the OD to refer entirely to the last days and the parousia. The present dissertation contends that clarification of Paul's hermeneutic in the Thessalonian Epistles (TE) will illuminate the meaning of the OD.
