The primary goal of this project is broadly two-fold. First, my mission was to take the best of modern OT and biblical Hebrew scholarship pertaining to the poetry of the OT and then apply that methodology to portions of passages in the NT that seem to be patterned in the style of biblical Hebrew poetry. In some cases, this yields a sharper understanding of the text. In other cases, it clears up common misconceptions long held. And in others, it confirms opinions that were left with little to no support.Second, so much of NT scholarship is out of touch with modern concepts of biblical Hebrew poetry. Rather, they remain transfixed in the 18th century under the thinking of Robert Lowth. I have endeavored to show how the pervasive Lowthian concepts of parallelism have permeated NT scholarship and how wrong-headed that is in its application to the NT. Therefore, NT scholars would benefit greatly by studying and using the approaches of OT scholars such as James Kugel, Robert Alter, and Adele Berlin as well as untying themselves from the outmoded system of Robert Lowth.
