This research focused on determining how users' spatial decision-making and performance were affected by differences in spatial perception and the use of either a conventional desktop computer system running the SketchUp software package or an immersive Virtual Reality interactive environment (IVRIE) system running the VR Sketch program and utilizing a VR headset and hand controllers.There were clear differences between the use of IVRIE and traditional Virtual Reality (TVR) that affected participants' cognition of the spatial factors of virtual spaces, including the sense of immersion, kind of interaction, experience on a human scale, and access to an eye-level view. These differences between TVR (or desktop-based Virtual Reality system (DT system)) and IVRIE resulted in variations in users' spatial presence, perception, cognition, and awareness. Few comparative, quantitative, and user-centered studies have attempted to understand the possible differences between these two systems. Also, most have tended to rely heavily on subjective self-evaluations and not empirical data.To achieve an explicit understanding for how each system produces differences in users' spatial performance, comparisons between and within the two were conducted via descriptive and inferential statistical testing using quantitative and qualitative data. The sample size for this research study was 60 participants.The quantitative data utilized in the analyses were extracted as numeric values from the measurements of space sizes produced by participants. Another branch of quantitative data was collected from participants' view usage patterns in the DT system. Qualitative data were extracted from participants' answers to the spatial perception questionnaire (SPQ) and participant profile questionnaire (PPQ). The qualitative data were coded on numeric scales for use in statistical testing.The results show that there were significant differences in the average space sizes produced by participants using the two systems. Texture, system usage sequence, and complexity of experiential/spatial guidelines resulted in some significant space size variations, depending on the type of the space and system utilized. Perception filters such as gender, age range, and familiarity with 3D immersive VR environments resulted in significant space size differences between the two systems. There were strong linear correlations between space sizes of the same category (either enclosure or a corridor) designed by participants according to different usage sequences. Thus, the average sizes of the spaces produced in the second system were predictable using the first system's average sizes. IVRIE was more efficient than the DT system for keeping a consistency of space size and reducing outliers. Different system usage sequences did not seem to affect view usage patterns in the DT system. Also, 78% of the sample population demanded additional views in IVRIE, along with the eye-level view.
