Cardiovascular disease is a significant problem affecting the adult population in the United States and has the potential to continue to make waves in healthcare and economics. Research in this area is broad and diverse with medical device design and disease state research relying on computational models to simulate anatomical structure, material properties and the resulting mechanics of target structures. The overall objective of this work was to develop a 3D model to predict passive ventricular mechanics. This thesis aimed to investigate and assign material properties to a hollow organ, model fiber architecture in a 3D model of the organ and simulate passive muscle movement. A thick-walled cylindrical model of the left ventricle was generated with material properties and an element-by-element fiber architecture with user varied orientation. Passive inflation of the left ventricle and the resulting pressure-volume relationship of the left ventricle with several different fiber orientations were produced. The results generated aligned with accepted phenomena and theories that govern the mechanics of cylinders with internal applied pressure and the left ventricle. Also included in this thesis is the application of this model to generating regions with unique fiber architectures and material properties, as in myocardial infarction or another type of tissue damage. The development of this model aims to serve as the foundation for several other research endeavors that build off the abilities of the model successfully exhibited in this thesis.
