Museums have historically served two primary functions: first as institutions of knowledge and repositories of aesthete and artifact central to an ideal, ordered society, and later, unironically, as places of refuge from the rigor and mundanity of that same, increasingly inimical society. Typically situated outside the city's center, museums have provided destinations for both physical and mental escape; Their interiors evoke a sense of spiritual transcendence to another realm completely. As cities continue to expand and become even more dense, the role of the museum remains much the same, but with different physical constraints. What defines a museum? This paper examines the evolution of the contemporary museum typology and evaluates its core functions and how they may be expanded upon and provided for outside the context of a "normal" building. It specifically focuses on the most recent addition to the Cincinnati Art Museum and its connection to the greater downtown and seeks to further expand upon this relationship between the public institution and its community.By utilizing the existing framework of Cincinnati's urban staircases and revitalizing their historical purpose, a network of unique sites begins to emerge that both connect whole neighborhoods and offer individual escape. Architectural interventions, divined as large-scale sculptural works of art, act as spaces of both respite and revelation and unify art form and built form to create transformative, immersive experiences similar, yet beyond the pre-defined conception of a typical museum.
