Overview: Adolescents constitute 20% of the world's population. During the adolescent stage of development, rapid changes are affecting psychological, physical, mental, and social behaviors such as sexuality. Adolescents' sexual development differs by gender. Girls tend to have less permissive sexual attitudes and behaviors than boys. Although individual characteristics and values play a role in adolescents' sexuality, other factors also need to be considered. These include the familial and parental factors, peers' influences, school environment and religion. Furthermore, there are cultural norms and social conditions that influence adolescents' sexual attitudes and behaviors. A new factor that cannot be ignored is the impact of globalization including communication technologies, which provides unlimited television and internet access, and plays a pivotal role in providing information on every topic, particularly sexuality.Conducting research on adolescent sexuality is difficult in all situations. Within Arab societies, discussion on sexuality poses even greater difficulties due to religious and social taboos. However, conducting research on adolescent sexuality in traditional communities adds another layer of complication due to strict cultural traditions and the tendency of traditional communities to have lower socioeconomic status. Moreover, many of these societies are undergoing rapid social changes due to globalization and modernization. Therefore, researchers face the additional challenge of finding an appropriate way of introducing a research project to the community; and the community based participatory research (CBPR) approach provides the optimal process. CBPR is a cooperative approach that recognizes the community as a research partner to ensure culturally appropriate study methodology for sensitive topics, such as adolescent sexuality. The study sample is comprised of adolescents of the Palestinian Israeli community, a mostly traditional society were VI discussions of adolescent sexuality rarely occur due to the many social, religious and cultural taboos. Research on adolescent sexuality in this community, consequently, is limited. It is this type of situation in which the CBPR approach is ideal as it promotes a partnership with the community to conduct research in a culturally appropriate way.Research objectives: To fill the information gap about Palestinian Israeli adolescent sexuality, this study aims to (1) use the culturally respectful CBPR approach to examine adolescents' sexuality; (2) develop a culturally appropriate model that illustrates the predictors of sexual knowledge, attitudes and behaviors among adolescents living in a traditional society undergoing change; (3) evaluate empirically the fit of the newly adapted Galaxy Model (GM) for sexual behaviors on Palestinian Israeli high school students; and (4) examine the GM's ability to predict adolescent knowledge on sexuality, comparing boys and girls.Methods: A mixed-methods study was used comprising qualitative and quantitative components. Ethics approvals were obtained and included: the university, the Ministry of Education, the schools' principals, the parents and the students.The qualitative component was comprised of implementing the CBPR approach to ensure the development of a culturally appropriate project including study instrumentation, linguistic adjustments to the Arabic questionnaire on students' sexuality and health, and the data collection procedure. The study was guided by the Galaxy Model (GM), a model specifically adapted to represent the personal, local and global influences on adolescents living in traditional societies.

520 $a רקע כללי: מתבגרים מהווים כ %20 מאוכלוסיית העולם. ההתבגרות כשלב התפתחותי מלווה בשינויים מהירים המשפיעים פסיכולוגית, פיזית, נפשית, חברתית וגם מינית על המתבגר. ישנו שוני מגדרי בהתפתחות המינית של המתבגרים, כאשר בנות נוטות לאמץ גישה פחות מתירנית בענייני מיניות מאשר בנים. מאפיינים וערכים אישיים ממלאים תפקיד חשוב במיניות המת בגרים, אך, יש לקחת בחשבון גורמים משפיעים נוספים כמו, גורמים הוריים ומשפחתיים, השפע ת קבוצת החברים, סביבת בית הספר והשפעות של דת ודתיות. יתר על כן, ההתנהגויות המיניות של מתבגרים מושפעות גם מנורמות תרבותיות ותנאים חברתיים . בנוסף, בשנים האחרונות לא ניתן להתעלם מהשפעתם של תהליכי הגלובליזציה. הטכנולוגיות התקשורתיות מספקות גישה בלתי מוגבלת לתכנים מהטלוויזיה והאינטרנט, ומהווים מקור מידע חשוב ומרכזי לכל נושא ובמיוחד, למידע על מיניות.מחקר על מיניות מתבגרים כרוך בקשיים לא מעטים בכל מצב ובכל חברה, במיוחד בקהילות הנחשבות כמסורתיות, כגון החברה הערבית בישראל בה דיון על מיניות עדיין נחשב כטאבו דתי וחברתי. יתר על כן , רבות מהקהילות הללו עוברות תהליך של שינויים חברתיים מהירים כתוצאה השפעות הגלובליזציה. כתוצאה מכך, חוקרים הבאים לחקור מיניות בני נוער בחברה מסורתית מתמודדים עם האתגר הנוסף של התאמה חברתית ותרבותית למתודולוגית המחקר. דוגמה, לגישה מחקרית המבוססת על המעורבות החברתי בתכנון ובצוע המחקר הינה, Based Community (CBPR (Research Participatory .גישה מחקרית זו רואה בקהילת היעד שותף בתהליך המחקר וזאת, כדי להבטיח שהמתודולוגיה המחקרית תהיה מותאמת תרבותית, במיוחד כאשר מדובר על נושאים רגישים, כגון מיניות מתבגרים.מחקר זה דן בבריאותם המינית של מתבגרים בחברה הפלסטינית בישראל, חברה אשר נחשבת למסורתית ברובה. מעט מאד מחקרים על מיניות מתבגרים בוצעו בחברה זו מכוון שדיונים על מיניות הנושא מתרחשים לרוב מאחורי דלתיים סגורות, בשל איסורים רבים חברתיים, דתיים ותרבותיים. בשל נסיבות אלה, גישת ה-CBPR נמצאה כגישה האידיאלית לביצוע המחקר, בה השותפות עם הקהילה תביא לתכנון ובצוע מחקר מותאם תרבותית לאוכלוסיית היעדמטרות המחקר: כדי למלא את הפער במידע על בריאותם המינית של מתבגרים בחברה הפלסטינית בישראל, מחקר זה שואף: )1 )להשתמש בשיטה המחקרית אשר לוקחת בחשבון את ההיבטים התרבותיים של החברה, שיטת ה CBPR ,כדי לבחון את מיניותם של המתבגרים; )2 )פיתוח מודל מותאם תרבותית אשר מדגים את הגורמים המנבאים ידע מיני, עמדות והתנהגויות מיניות של מתבגרים החיים בחברה מסורתית העוברת תהליך של שינוי חברתי; )3 )לבחון אמפירית את התאמתו של המודל החדש, (GM (Model Galaxy The להתנהגויות מיניות של תלמידי בתי ספר תיכוניים ערבים בישראל; ו )4 )לבחון את יכולתו של ה- GM לחזות ידע על מיניות בקרב המתבגרים, תוך השוואת רמות הידע בין בנים ובנות.שיטות המחקר: מחקר זה משלב שיטות מחקר כמותיות ואיכותניות. תחילה, התקבלו האישורים הנחוצים לפי כללי האתיקה המחקרית מוועדת האתיקה האוניברסיטאית, ממשרד החינוך, ממנהלי בתי הספר, מההורים ומהתלמידים עצמם.המרכיב האיכותני כלל יישום גישת ה-CBPR כדי להבטיח פיתוח פרויקט מותאם תרבותית, כולל כלי המחקר, התאמה לשונית של השאלון על מיניות בשפה הערבית ואת תהליך איסוף הנתונים. המחקר הושתת על המודל החדש )GM ,)מודל אשר מייצג את ההשפעות האישיותיות, המקומיות והגלובליות על מתבגרים החיים בחברות מסורתיות. המודל כלל מספר משתנים אשר המייצגים את שלוש העולמות האלה: עולם המתבגר )ידע, עמדות והתנהגויות(; העולם האישי )מין, אם יש חבר/ה, הערכה עצמית, יחסי הורה-ילד, דתיות ואמונות(; העולם המקומי )קבוצת החברים, משפחה, בית ספר, דת, השתלבות תרבותית ומדיניות וחוקים(; והעולם הגלובלי )אינטרנט, טלוויזיה ודיסוננס תרבותי(.
