This thesis examines the Bleeding Kansas era through the lens of environmental history, and focuses, in part, on how the physical environment of Kansas Territory was misrepresented by free-state promoters and emigrant aid societies. This paper shifts focus from the traditional Bleeding Kansas narrative of politics, slavery, violence, and conflict toward everyday immigrants' experiences with nature, poverty, and the "benevolent" organizations established to aid them. The first chapter focuses on free-state emigrant aid societies (and affiliates), their ideology and rhetoric, and the deceptive ways they promoted Kansas Territory. The second chapter focuses on the harsh realities free-state settlers faced in Kansas, how the physical environment differed from promotional descriptions, and the inability of Kansas aid organizations to support the immigrants they had inspired. The third chapter focuses on aid society efforts to provide relief for free-state settlers, first in 1856, then during the drought of 1860. It also discusses how Kansas societies ultimately employed the tactics they had used to sell Kansas Territory to save its people from destitution.
