Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that primarily affects dopamine producing neurons in an area of the brain called the substantia nigra. Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease affecting nearly 1 million individuals in the United States and more than 6 million worldwide. Parkinson's disease increases individuals' fall risk due to gait and balance impairments. Dance therapy is an emerging intervention being utilized to improve gait and balance in individuals with PD. Objective: The primary objective of this meta-analysis is to explore the effectiveness of dance therapy in improving motor symptoms such as, balance and gait in individuals with PD evidenced by improvements in the Timed up and Go (TUG) and Berg Balance Scale (BBS) outcome measures. Methods: A literature search from November 2020 to June 2021 was conducted utilizing the following databases: One search, PubMed, ScienceDirect, National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), and EBSCO. Studies which met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected and utilized for data collection. The following search terms were utilized in the previously mentioned databases: dance therapy and PD, dance and PD, and dance therapy. Results: The primary and sub-analyses revealed that dance therapy trends toward improving TUG and BBS scores for individuals with PD, however, these findings were found to be statistically insignificant for the TUG and statistically significant for the BBS. Conclusions: Findings from this meta-analysis suggest that dance therapy helps to improve TUG and BBS scores in individuals who have PD, therefore demonstrating an improvement in balance and gait. Further research is needed in order to identify which dance type is the most effective in improving TUG and BBS scores and therefore, improving balance and gait in individuals with PD.
