Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), 2022.
Health risks of plastic waste burning are substantial. Progressive increase in plastic waste volume in rural villages in China leads to more waste burning, which pose considerable negative health hazards to the villagers. In the literature, interventional studies on improving plastic waste management practices were non-existent. As such, there is an urgent need to add to the literature on behaviour change communication intervention targeting plastic waste burning, in particular by separate collection. The objectives of this thesis are to explore the predictors of villagers' behavioural intention for separate collection of plastic waste (SC), to assess if providing threat-efficacy appeal is more effective (than solely providing communication materials and simple instructions) in increasing the practice of SC, and to explain the reasons for households to practise and not to practise SC.Following the five steps of P-Process, this thesis can be divided by two parts. Part I comprises 60 randomly cross-sectional surveys. Firth logistic regression was used to analyse the predictors for behavioural intention of SC. Results showed family support to take collective action, perceiving SC as not difficult and perceived autonomy in decision making are important predictors, which were useful in persuasive message design. Part II comprises a parallel two-arm, single-blinded randomised controlled trial stratified by two sub-villages, entitled Communication for Plastic WASTE Management Practices (C- 9 PASTE), to assess the effects of door-to-door, interpersonal persuasion using threat efficacy appeal together with communication material and health education pamphlets (intervention group) over the usual practice with only material and pamphlets (control group). 70 households were recruited and 68 households were followed-up at 7-month interval. Repeated measures analysis of covariance revealed statistical non-significance in the number of plastic items separately collected in the Blue Bin, F(1,65) = 0.069, p=0.79 between intervention and control group at post-intervention, post-reinforcement and 7- month follow-up, taking baseline as covariate. As for the weight of the plastic items, a similar pattern of non-significance was noted, F(1,65)=0.033, p=0.86. The results may suggest that using interpersonal persuasion by threat-efficacy appeal did not differ from distributing materials with simple instructions and reminders to bring about SC. As such, a simple form of interpersonal communication, i.e. brief instructions on the use and maintenance of the Blue Bin and periodic reminders, together with health education pamphlets and the Blue Bin, may suffice to elicit the practice of separate collection of plastic waste. Subsequent to the conduct of C-PASTE, an explanatory sequential multiple case study of 10 cases was conducted to facilitate further explanations of the trial results with multiple sources of data framed under social practice theory. Results were analysed by framework analysis in form of case summary matrix alongside pattern matching and cross-case synthesis. Results indicated that "practitioners" are those who had continuous use with the Blue Bin (material), positive connotations with the use of the Bin/the practice (meaning) and know-how (competence); and suggested that as long as the three elements are functionally present, the absence of a strategic, tailored interpersonal persuasion would not affect the elicitation of the desired behaviour. To our understanding, C-PASTE was the first-of-its-kind interventional research in SC for Dong ethnic group in rural Guizhou. The trial data added to the literature on the effects of using interpersonal persuasion with threat-efficacy appeal to conduct behaviour change communication trial in rural contexts, particularly villages undergoing agrarian transition. In addition, framing an intervention as a social practice may guide the planning of future health promotion effort in rural contexts.
