Social distancing and quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in a reduction of face-to-face social contact for most of us, including many children and teens. This condition has had serious negative impacts on child development, especially during critical developmental periods. Children who become more accustomed to social distance than social interaction run the risk of developing a variety of negative adaptive outcomes including but not limited to socially withdrawn children, lack of healthy nutrition, socio-emotional difficulties, peer difficulties, and educational and learning difficulties. The project presented here focuses on children's learning and development after the COVID-19 pandemic. Through researching educational philosophies and re-examining the traditional school education model, the thesis investigation focuses on the Montessori model which promotes and encourages play as a learning tool to create a nurturing and positive educational environment. As White pointed out: "PLAY builds the foundation for a lifetime of learning. Through play, children learn to regulate their behavior, lay the foundations for later learning in science and mathematics, figure out the complex negotiations of social relationships, build a repertoire of creative problem-solving skills, and so much more."The project will argue that by introducing thresholds as inhabitable spatial components where play is inserted, interior design can support and promote behavioral development and learning in children. The thresholds will perform as experiential sensory chambers that are activated through the manipulation of materials, lighting conditions, and spatial composition and proportion. Additionally, a second layer of the thesis will focus on the introduction of an interior farming environment with the intention to expose children to experience cultivating, harvesting, and preparing healthy meals as a means for learning about proper nutrition.
