Attempting to embrace the real world of multidisciplinary problems, designers and engineers have gradually shifted their focus from solving complicated problems to solving complex problems, and from designing ideal systems to designing complex systems. This is because many issues face designers today are situated in sociotechnical systems that affect the functioning of a system as a whole and, thus, display characteristics including emergence, adaptation, self-organization, and complexity that cannot be addressed by a definitive design solution. In response to this challenge, concepts such as systemic design are suggested for developing a theoretical basis and pragmatic approaches to tackle complex issues. In a similar vein, the adaptive design framework proposed in this study intends to provide theoretical principles and a pragmatic approach that complements existing design methods for designing in a complex system. The adaptive design framework in this study adopts an agent-based approach to understanding the effect of design interventions based on augmented artifacts that drives system adaptation. This study employs a mixed methods research design that comprises agent-based modeling and simulations (ABMS), a laboratory experiment, and a post-experimental survey and interview. The design of the agent-based model was based on the principles of homophily and preferential attachment, and was scripted with design interventions to influence the behavior of agents in a way similar to that in the empirical experiment. In the experiment, two design interventions were devised for participants to receive the information associated with decisions made by others and provide feedback to the system. The first was the information mediated by physical artifacts augmented with digital capability for agents to use as a reference. The second was the feedback mechanism used to update the choices made by the agents. The underlying assumption of the design was that people are susceptible to social influence, which was made concrete in the form of a mediating influence afforded by artifacts. Participants' level of susceptibility to social influence (SSI) was collected using survey questionnaires, and their reasoning for making decisions during the experiment was studied through interviews. The empirical study revealed that participants were susceptible to mediated influences, which generated emergent effects resulting in system adaptivity as measured by the betweenness centrality of the networks created in the experiment. However, the effect of mediated influences differed depending on personal factors and situational factors. Participants who received a higher SSI score were generally more confident and felt the task was easier when the reference was present. In general, most participants were more satisfied with their results when they could reference to the choices of others but had a better experience when they made decisions independently. Also, they regarded the reference as being helpful especially during uncertain situations, when they could learn from others and explore possibilities during their decision-making. The agent-based model faithfully simulated the observed phenomenon, showing global adaptation from local interactions. The topological forms of the networks generated under the mediated influence were structured more like stars or hierarchy than cliques, indicated by their mean value and standard deviation of betweenness centrality.
