Cultural exchange has occurred throughout human history and forms the basis of social evolution. The sharing of culture is transmitted through vessels. Metaphorically, cultural vessels serve as an abstract container for the qualities and values of a society. The scope of these values defines who is centered or marginalized within a particular group. However, when these vessels are exchanged, their design may blur or fracture the boundaries between groups, creating opportunities for exchange, appropriation, and cultural homage. These cultural vessels are manifested in many aspects of society: from the embodiment of lived experiences of people to designed objects or artifacts. However, in our hyper-globalized world, cross-cultural identities and interactions have created an expanded but nuanced spectrum of cultural formation. This cultural vibrancy presents challenges: it can be difficult to generate content without being insensitive or culturally tone-deaf for design. Such uncertainty around authenticity and representation has fueled a call for clarity, resulting in a climate of political and cultural correctness. This investigation explores the interplay of cultural vessels and exchange by critiquing political correctness and cultural appropriation. This investigation will allow us to postulate a means for how designers can ethically interrogate and create cultural vessels.
