Research has shown that many international students often deal with issues of fluency, depression, and decreased self-efficacy as they transition into a new cultural and educational environment. Using a qualitative interpretative phenomenological analysis, this study explored the transitional experiences of La Loma mountain students of the Dominican Republic who temporarily migrated to attend high school at the neighboring Roman Catholic diocese in the United States of America. The study employed the marginal man theory, specifically, the concept of marginal men and the analytical concepts of cultural, psychological, and social marginality to explore the transitional experiences of seven high school students from five different schools within the Diocese of Okeechobee (pseudonym). Conducting semistructured interviews with participants at the respective high schools, the study addressed topics such as acculturative stress and language barriers in addition to the academic, psychological, and social impacts of marginality. The findings revealed 10 emergent themes as follows: sense of belonging, significant challenges, coping strategies, perceived status, school in La Loma, student behavior, stress, depression, relationships with others, and isolation and discrimination. Evidence from the findings supports the conclusions that the participants do not suffer significantly from cultural, psychological, or social marginality and cannot be considered marginal men. Suggestions for future research include continuing this study to increase the number of participants, conducting a longitudinal study to research the participant continued experiences after high school, and comparing the participants' experiences to the experiences of other international students at diocesan schools.
