We develop and test methods for determining the elastic wave structure of crust and upper mantle and for examining the uncertainties in earthquake locations. Parts of those independent studies are included in this thesis. In the first part (chapter 2), a circular ray tracing technique is developed for accurately computing travel times in tomographic techniques. Three dimensional velocity structures and hypocenters are simultaneously determined by fitting the arrivals of P wave generated by earthquakes in Morgan Hill and Bear Valley areas of central California. The results generally agree with geological and gravity observations and confirm several of the principal structural features determined by previous studies. In the second part (chapter 3), I test and compare two existing methods of receiver function analysis and then apply them to estimate one-dimensional structures beneath a small seismic array in the Pinyon Flat of southern California. The results suggest that the Moho depth is about 25 km and a low velocity zone exits at mid-crustal depth (9-15 km) beneath the array. In the last part (chapter 4), we examine the existence of deep earthquakes beneath central Taiwan using information density functions, define a seismic zone through a joint density function, and present a mantle shear model to explain the existence of these anomalous earthquakes beneath central Taiwan.
