The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of problem-based learning and game-based learning on student achievement and student engagement. Unexpectedly, this research was done during a global pandemic resulting in the implementation of remote learning. The study was conducted in an Applications of Algebra I course with two classes of 35 students. Each class was taught using one of the mentioned learning models and a variety of learning platforms. After students were given a pre- and post- assessment, results showed that problem-based learning did not necessarily have a greater effect on student achievement over game-based learning. In addition, data showed no real difference on student engagement between each group.

520 $a El proposito de este estudio fue explorar los efectos del aprendizaje basado en problemas y el aprendizaje basado en juegos sobre el logro de los estudiantes y la participacion de los estudiantes. Inesperadamente, esta investigacion se realizo durante una pandemia mundial que dio lugar a la implementacion del aprendizaje remoto. El estudio se llevo a cabo en un curso de Aplicaciones de algebra I con dos clases de 35 estudiantes. Cada clase se enseno utilizando uno de los modelos de aprendizaje mencionados y una variedad de plataformas de aprendizaje. Despues de que los estudiantes recibieron una evaluacion previa y posterior, los resultados mostraron que el aprendizaje basado en problemas no necesariamente tiene un mayor efecto en el logro de los estudiantes sobre el aprendizaje basado en juegos. Ademas, los datos no mostraron ninguna diferencia real en la participacion de los estudiantes entre cada grupo.
