Chicago has long been viewed as the "Hollywood" of nontheatrical film. In the same way that the physical site of Hollywood has come to stand for an industry based around the production of feature-length narrative entertainments, Chicago is often invoked by scholars to help define an array of production, distribution, and exhibition practices associated with everything outside the theater. Despite Chicago's reputation as a major center for educational, institutional, and industrial film, there is little scholarly investigation into the organizations that produced these films or their supporting infrastructure. This dissertation takes seriously Chicago's reputation and examines two very different institutions and their affiliated organizations for the production of nontheatrical film in the city: 1) Encyclopaedia Britannica Films, the world's largest educational film producer for much of the postwar period and its antecedents at the University of Chicago; 2) the Institute of Design, the American iteration of the German Bauhaus and one of the first US schools to teach film production within the context of art, design, and commercial-nontheatrical film and its alumni outpost Goldsholl Design Associates. Through archival sources, primary materials, and close analysis of films, this project maps each organization's histories, aesthetics, and conceptions about film from the 1920s through the 1950s. This spans a period generally seen to be one of emergence, consolidation, and growth for the nontheatrical field overall. In doing so, this dissertation not only expands our understanding of nontheatrical practice in Chicago, it also illuminates some of the ways the actors within each organization sought to use film as a tool for social engagement and change. At the same time, by using the social and political context of Chicago as a backdrop for its analysis, this dissertation reveals the many issues that problematize the ways these institutions and the individuals within them imagined film to work. Finally, as a site where ideas about nontheatrical film were being defined, tested, and converging, it proposes that Chicago can serve as more than a rhetorical device when invoking nontheatrical film; rather, it might be understood as a microcosm for the nontheatrical field overall.
