This is blended qualitative and arts-based methods study of high school students, aged 16-17 years old, from an art and design high school in a large midwestern urban city. The purpose of this research is to show how museum collections can be used to promote critical thinking and create culturally responsive museum and art-making experiences for young people by using a critical pedagogy of representation in order to confront master narratives and systems of inequity. In this research, systems of domination are confronted via examination of early American genre painting and sculpture. This research also uses the work of Kehinde Wiley to examine the dynamics of race, and notions of beauty and power. Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP) seeks to educate students through the cultural lens with which they view the world, with critical inquiry being an essential component. The literature explores the pedagogical underpinnings of CRP as well as the historical relationship of museums to communities of color and the traditional position held by the medium of photography within museum hierarchy. Research participants were able to make global connections between Wiley's work and current events such as the murder of George Floyd and the Covid-19 pandemic. Drawing upon the work of bell hooks, who advocates for photography as a tool of empowerment for marginalized groups, both the researcher and participants subsequently employed the medium to express their individual lived experiences.
