In the wake of the 2019 college admissions scandal and increasing economic inequality in higher education, elite colleges in the United States have taken measures to increase the number of students of low income at their institutions. This research uses the Mann-Whitney U statistical test to analyze the effectiveness of common admission practices thought to increase fairness at elite institutions. Using a grounded theory approach, this research also uses interviews conducted with students of low income, faculty members, and admissions counselors to understand what more can be done for such students and if these efforts are helpful to decrease socioeconomic inequality at a societal level.Mann-Whitney U results indicate that institutions meeting the full demonstrated financial need of students have a significantly higher proportion of students receiving Pell Grants as well as a significantly lower median income. Mann-Whitney U results also indicate that institutions using need-blind admissions do not have a significantly higher percentage of students receiving Pell Grants and have a non-significantly higher median income. The perspectives offered in interviews call in to question recent research that argues higher education can be used as a method to decrease socioeconomic stratification.
