Millennial generation employees leave organizations for better-paying jobs, leadership, and work-life balance concerns. However, previous research does not indicate why millennial military members decided to leave after their initial enlistment. The goal of the study was to understand if job satisfaction or job dissatisfaction, as seen through the lenses of Herzberg's two-factor theory, were instrumental in air traffic controller's decision to leave the military. The research question was: What motivational factors contribute to millennial enlisted military air traffic controllers exiting the military after their initial commitment of four to six years? For this study, the researcher used a generic qualitative inquiry and a purposive sampling strategy to explore the transition experiences of millennial air traffic controllers. The participants consisted of millennial air traffic controllers who were no longer in the military and served at least four years. The participants answered eight primary questions and additional probing questions if additional information was needed. Through thematic inductive analysis, the following themes were identified, indicating their motivations for joining the military and decisions which led to their transitioning: motivations for joining the military, job satisfaction, job dissatisfaction, motivation for leaving. The findings confirmed and supported current literature indicating the millennial employee will leave an organization when new career opportunities arise or when there are work-life balance concerns. Future researchers may consider military members who remained in the military past their initial enlistment despite job dissatisfaction concerns.
