It is true that most monsters are just figments of the human imagination, but monster stories and monster images have been part of human culture since the very beginning of civilization. They scare and mystify but at the same time they attract. The source of monsters is in our human selves. Just as analyzing a painting can provide insight into the author's mind, analyzing monsters and their stories can help us understand human psychology, society, history, and culture. In ancient times, the appearance of monsters represented the ancient people's fear and worship of nature. In modern culture, monsters show the eternal infinite unknown and the limit of thought of human beings. From ancient times to the present, monsters have always been "uncontrollable", "otherworldly", and "have infinite possibilities". Monsters represent people's eternal fear of the unknown. This research begins with the history of monsters and defines them according to their morphological characteristics. Through case studies of classic monster images, classification and summary of existing monster sciences (also called Monsterology), and through comparison of monsters' commonalities and differences across different cultures, in various literature and mythologies. Then, starting from these definitions, it examines the methodology to create monsters, and what kind of specific conditions and design processes are needed to produce them, such as magnifying, exaggerating, morphing, and recombining. Ironically, the "undefined" monster image is confined to limited human knowledge. We can always see in monsters, the shadows of familiar things. Monster creators will also bring humanity into the monster image. For example, the concept of good and evil, the behavior of persecution and aggression, maybe the reflection of ourselves in monsters.By studying these fantasy creatures, we may better understand ourselves, our relationship with society, and technology.
