This paper recounts the analysis and treatment of two embroidered samplers from New England, dated 1815 and 1823-1824, respectively. The textiles are family heirlooms that belong to a private client. The first section places the pieces into context within the history of embroidered samplers, describing their use as educational tools and their representation of young female artists working within patriarchal social institutions. The composition, materials, motifs, and poetry are analyzed to provide insight into the artists' personal values, tastes, and circumstances. Finally, genealogical research traces the connection between the artists and the client. Having been passed down over many generations, the samplers provide an ideal case study of conservation issues typical of textiles stored in a domestic environment. The second and third chapters describe the conservation treatment of each sampler in preparation for reframing and vertical display in the client's home. Processes of vacuuming, humidification, suction cleaning, dyeing-to-match threads, infilling loss, adhesive removal, rust removal, mounting, and conservation framing are discussed. Digitally printed infills are used to replicate the texture of woven fabric, and a template is developed and presented for color matching printed textiles. These chapters also examine the ethical challenges of working with a private client whose end goals may differ from that of a museum collection, as well as some health and safety considerations confronting pregnant and nursing conservators. Finally, the decision to preserve an associated material, used in an earlier restoration, is investigated.
