Coastal areas continue to be challenged by the impacts of climate change, particularly in regards to sea level rise. Because land use planning regulatory and non-regulatory techniques enable communities to adjust how parcels are developed or restricted from use, communities can utilize these mechanisms to adapt to the current and anticipated impacts of sea level rise. This thesis first explores both regulatory and non-regulatory land use planning tools to address sea level rise. The thesis also assesses how these techniques could be implemented in the Cape and Islands, a particularly climate vulnerable region. Many communities on the Cape and Islands are already recognizing the significant threat sea level rise poses in the region and they are beginning to shape comprehensive responses to these challenges. This research provides additional considerations for the region to improve resiliency by utilizing land use planning strategies in innovative ways.
