Objective: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to compare laser therapy with exercise versus exercise alone to treat pain in adults with subacromial impingement syndrome. In addition, it will compare low to high doses of laser therapy on pain in those patients. Methods: Peer reviewed articles on laser therapy treating subacromial impingement syndrome were analyzed using Physiotherapy Evidence Database scores, inclusion, and exclusion criteria. Statistical analysis was then used to calculate the effect sizes of mean changes from the pre- to post- pain measurements from the Visual Analog Scale. Results: A total of 6 articles were included to examine the effect of laser therapy. Laser therapy and exercise, specifically with lower dosage application was more effective in reducing subacromial impingement syndrome pain than exercise alone with grand effect sizes of .54 (Lower Confidence Interval= -.28; Upper Confidence Interval= 1.36; Q-Value=39.94; I2 = 87.48%) and .79 (Lower Confidence Interval = .07; Upper Confidence Interval = 1.51; Q-value= 72.75; I2= 89%). Conclusion: Early evidence suggests that laser and exercise combined is better than exercise alone to reduce subacromial impingement syndrome pain, and lower dosage produced better results in pain reduction. However, further studies are required to better understand the effect of laser therapy on subacromial impingement syndrome.
